Our ancient fraternity has been perpetuated because, through the years, a relatively small group of men has been determined to keep the fires of learning lit. These men are hungry for more light. They want to experience real brotherhood. They want to serve their communities.

Brethren, pat yourselves on the back for conferring twenty-one (21) Degrees, including nine (9) Master Masons, so far during 2009. Through the diligence of our excellent Secretary and with nudging from some Brothers, we have even been able to process one or two Petitions for Advancement by Brothers whose year expired.

Summer-time is now upon us, crawfish season is drawing to a close, the high spring river levels are receding, fishing is getting super good (see The Advocate Sports page on Thursdays).

If men are morally qualified to become Masons, then what does Masonry offer them? The purpose of Masonry is to improve. It is a system of morality. It means nothing to those who lack the desire to grow spiritually.

There are as many ways to memorize as there are individuals to learn the Ritual. We will present here a way that is organized, systematic, easy and effective. It is a method that has worked well for all who have tried it. First, let us put to rest any lame excuse that there are people...

Spring is “busting out all over,” both in the GATOU’s outdoor world and St. James Lodge. The City of Baton Rouge is alive with Mardi Gras activities. Remember to change your clocks for the Sunday, March 8 return to D.S.T. Degrees are being conferred in rapid succession with seven (7) during January.

Many, including me, believe that Masonry is on the brink of rejuvenation. Our beloved Fraternity in Louisiana has been suffering through a reduced harvest of Masons, especially following multiple hurricanes in 2005 and 2008.

Thank you for granting me the honor of being Master of St. James Lodge for 2009. We all look forward to an exciting and progressive year for our Lodge. I assure you I will work hard to merit the trust you have placed in me.

Brethren, The holiday season is now upon us and with it comes many traditions and customs. We are often told to enjoy the many blessings of the season, yet we often have difficulty focusing on the holiday’s true meaning amid the hustle and bustle of the season.
